Pune: Despite continuous efforts to address traffic congestion through Gandhigiri and fines, traffic indiscipline in Wagholi remains a significant issue.
In a unique approach, the Lonikand Traffic Division has launched an awareness campaign, incorporating Gandhigiri, where violators are greeted with flowers and educational posters rather than immediate fines, to remind them of their role in creating the ongoing traffic chaos.
The Wagholi area, located along the vital Pune-Nagar Road, has long been plagued by traffic jams, with vehicles often stuck for hours. The Lonikand Traffic Department recently took action, imposing hefty fines totaling ₹7 lakh in a month, and conducting awareness drives.
However, many drivers continue to flout basic traffic rules such as driving on the wrong side, triple riding, and parking illegally.
In a bid to send a softer yet impactful message, the police have resorted to Gandhigiri, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's peaceful protests. Officers have been seen handing flowers to offenders while holding signs urging compliance with rules.
Messages like "Follow Lane Discipline," and "Follow the Speed Limit" were displayed by traffic personnel. Through this peaceful approach, police aim to remind citizens that they are responsible for the worsening traffic situation.
Despite these efforts, traffic violations in Wagholi continue unabated. Many residents fail to comply with rules when driving locally but exhibit better discipline when traveling in other areas such as Chandannagar.
Assistant Police Inspector Gajanan Jadhav reiterated the need for drivers to understand their responsibility. He emphasized that the traffic department would continue to use Gandhigiri to educate violators but warned that stringent measures would remain in place for those who persist in breaking the law.
With nearly 150,000 vehicles passing through Pune Nagar Road daily, the issue of traffic congestion is severe, impacting not only Wagholi residents but also travelers from regions like Marathwada and Vidarbha.
