Pune: With India set to start its COVID-19 vaccination drive from January 16, Pune administration has formed 16 centres in the city for the vaccine drive.
Pune, one of the worst-hit cities in India witnessed a spike of COVID-19 cases in 2020. With Maharashtra government forming 511 centres for the vaccination drive, Pune district has reserved 55 centres for vaccination drive.
The priority vaccine recipients include healthcare workers, frontline COVID warriors and people above 50-years of age and below 50 with comorbidities. As per the operational guidelines, government health facilities at and above the level of the primary health centre or urban primary health centre can be used as session site.
Around 1.1 lakh healthcare workers in Pune district are expected to be vaccinated in the huge vaccination drive.

Meanwhile, the first consignment of COVID-19 vaccine ‘Covishield’ was shipped from Pune’s Serum Institute of India (SII) on Tuesday. The locations include Lucknow, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Bhubhaneshwar, Kolkata, Karnal and Guwahati.
The consignment, in three temperature-controlled trucks, departed for the city’s airport. The serum has received a purchase order from the Centre for 11 million doses of vaccine, which would be available at Rs 200 per dose.
