Pune: The holy month of Ramzan ended on Friday with the celebration of Eid ul-Fitr. The 30 days of fasting, which is called ‘Roza,’ ended on Friday night. While on Roza, people are allowed to eat only before sunrise (Sehri) and after sunset (Iftar).
The world famous ‘sheer khurma’ is served, a rich dessert made up of vermicelli pudding, followed by other tasty, mouth-watering snacks on Eid. The most amazing part of Eid for children is that they get new clothes and eidi (pocket money). During this month, Muslims strictly follow all the rituals from reading Quran to performing namaaz five times a day. People believe that Ramzan is not only for fasting but it is a spiritual journey in which you are close to Allah.
On the day of Eid, people meet their near ones, they pray, eat and celebrate the occasion. A very important aspect of Eid is ‘zakat’. It is a religious obligation for all Muslims, who meet the necessary criteria of wealth. It starts with giving 2.5 per cent or 1/40th of your total wealth to the needy, who could be your relatives, neighbours or NGOs. The motive behind zakat is to rehabilitate the poor. There are two major Eids in a year, one is Eid ul-Fitr also known as ‘Meethi Eid’ and other is Bakra-Eid.
