Pune: Fergusson College (FC) will start MSc course in Data Science from the academic year 2019-2020, announced Principal Ravindrasinha Pardeshi on Thursday.
Pardeshi claimed that FC will be the first college under Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) to have started ‘masters course in data science’. The course will commence from July first week.
The course will have a total intake capacity of 30 seats. “Selection of students will be purely based on the merit received in the entrance exam. Students who have a background of science faculty are eligible to join this course,” said Pardeshi.
The course is intended for graduates in computer science, mathematics and statistics or any equivalent degree.
The course will consist of 80 credits for four semesters in two years full-time course.
Speaking about the need of data scientist in the industrial market, Member of the Board of Governors Adesh Gokhale said, “There is a dearth of data scientists in the market. But data science has a huge scope in sectors like agriculture, health care and cybersecurity where data mining is done on a large scale.”
“Our course is also designed with consideration of all these aspects. So our final year semesters focus upon industrial-based syllabus, training and projects,” Gokhale said.
