Pimpri: In a major cricket betting racket, the Pimpri Chinchwad police on Friday arrested 33 persons from three different spots for allegedly betting on the cricket match played between India and England at the Gahujne Stadium here on Friday.
Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Krishna Prakash said, "Acting on the tip-off about the same, three teams were formed by Senior Police Inspector Vivek Muglikar of Wakad Police Station. Police teams raided three locations including an under-construction on hillock near to the Gahunje Stadium."
He further informed the gang used a time lag of six seconds and an optionn of live streaming to accept and even place bets and make money. These men at the high-rise building near the stadium also used binoculars to keep look on the match before placing bets.
A case is registered at Wakad police station.
Police during the raid recovered 74 mobile phones, three laptops, four binoculars, a four-wheeler, foreign currency including Dollars, Pounds and Dirhams and other items total worth Rs 45 lakh.
Of the arrested members, five are from Madhya Pradesh, 13 from Haryana, 11 from Maharashtra, two from Rajasthan and one from Uttar Pradesh and Goa respectively.
A case is registered under Sections 353, 332, 188, 269 of Indian Penal Code along with Section 4, 5, and 12(a) of Gambling Act; Section 21 of Indian Telegraph Act and Section 7 of Criminal Law Amendment Act. All arrested are remanded to the custody of Pimpri Chinchwad police till March 30.
