Pune: A gaur (Indian bison) which strayed into a residential area in Pune’s Kothrud area on Wednesday died.

The animal which was rescued after five hours created panic among residents of Mahatma society in Kothrud. A team of forest personnel was rushed to the spot and police personnel were deployed in the area to control the crowd.

As it had some injuries, medical assistance was provided by the forest officials but he succumbed late in the afternoon. According to the sources, the bison sustained serious injuries which forced his heart stopped functioning.

Number of people tried to see how close they can get to a bison for a photo or a video. People gathered around the forest personnel with a view to driving the animals back. Some say that gathering of crowds scared the bison.

The Indian Bison was spotted at lane number 1 of Mahatma Society on Wednesday early morning. Initially morning walkers thought it was a cow or buffalo but when they realised that it was an Indian Bison, panic set in.

Mahesh Gole, President of Mahatma Society said, "This is the first time that such incident has happened in our society. Peacocks were spotted regularly in the society areas but bison has been spotted for the first time."

The Indian bison, has been listed as 'vulnerable' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List.
