Mumbai: The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday has raised questions to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in regards to the indiscriminate, unsupervised, unskilled digging in the Mumbai city and Kemps Corner area, after several local residents reached out to the party, complaining of digging in the immediate vicinity preceding the landslide.
Preeti Sharma Menon, Senior AAP Leader, said, “It must be noted that given the migrant labour exodus, there is a shortfall in the workforce, which is being compensated by unskilled labour, without any technical know-how or formal training. They are being deployed to continue work somehow. This is in direct contravention of all norms and government guidelines. If this can happen in Kemps Corner, in the heart of Mumbai City, which is near the seat of government, one can nobly imagine what is going on elsewhere in Mumbai and its suburbs. How many structures and roads have been put at risk, because of this ‘digging’?”
Speaking to Sakal Times, she added: “We have written to the Maharashtra CM Udhav Thackeray, and the Municipal Commissioner demanding accountability and have called for a probe in the Kemps Corner landslide. We have also called for penal action against those flouting norms while digging for utilities and comprehensive, transparent policy to enable citizens to monitor infrastructure work being undertaken and ensure compliance of norms by the contractor and concerned govt agencies.”

Taking a dig at the lackadaisical BMC administration and using creative sarcasm at it’s best, citizens across Mumbai, took to Twitter to hold an innovative protest by tweeting images of indiscriminate digging across Mumbai, with the hashtag #SonaMilaKya.
“Mumbaikars are already reeling under the pandemic and reduced economic activity. Bad governance only amplifies their woes. Worse is the callousness of the government using the pandemic as an excuse to cover its ineptitude," claimed the AAP leader.
