Pune: As per data furnished by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), post monsoon rainfall has been deficient by 66 per cent in the country. Also, Central India, which includes Maharashtra, has received 88 per cent deficient rainfall this post monsoon season.
According to IMD, northwest India received 85 per cent deficient rainfall between October 1 to October 11, which was the post southwest monsoon season. During the same time, Southern peninsula received a deficiency of 26 per cent rainfall and east and northeast India received 81 per cent deficient rainfall.
Speaking to Sakal Times, Mahesh Palawat, Vice-Presidevnt, Meteorology and Climate Change with Skymet, a private weather forecaster, said that the rains have drastically reduced post southwest monsoon because of the cyclone formation.
“Because of ‘Titli,’ the cyclone in the Bay of Bengal, the northeastern winds have not brought any moisture to the land, which is basically responsible for the rain. However, as the cyclone has subdued, there are chances that the rains will continue in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh,” said Palawat.
IMD has also forecast that under the weakened cyclonic storm ‘Titli,’ widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura till October 17.
Due to a scarcity of rainfall in the State, weather experts noted that the crops in harvesting will not be affected. “However, the lack of rainfall will affect the upcoming rabi crops like jowar and maize. Also, crops like sugarcane and grapes, which are there all around the year, will need alternative irrigation systems to sustain,” noted the expert.
IMD has predicted that rainfall is predicted in Konkan and Goa region whereas central Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha will experience dry weather till October 18. On Sunday, the highest maximum temperature was reported at 37 degrees Celcius in Solapur and the lowest minimum temperature was reported at 15.3 degrees Celcius in Parbhani.
