Pune: Books written by Swami Vivekanand, which are inspirational for many came into question by the prosecution during the proceeding related to the custodial hearing of Nagpur-based lawyer Surendra Gadling, who was arrested for his alleged role in organising Elgar Parishad and his alleged connection with CPI (Maoists).
The court of Judge AS Bhaisare on Monday shifted Gadling from police custody to judicial custody till July 4.
During the hearing, an application was submitted by defence lawyer Siddharth Patil to provide some law books, blank papers and books of Swami Vivekanand and Swami Gokulanand to Gadling. A strong objection was taken by the prosecution against all three demands including the demand for books of Swami Vivekanand.
District Government Pleader Ujjwala Pawar requested the court to grant the books only if they are not banned. Defence lawyer Siddharth Patil said, “We have made the application in court to provide some law books, some books of Swami Vivekanand and a few blank papers. Though the prosecution didn’t raise any objection against law books they strongly objected to books of Vivekanand. The DGP said in court it should be checked whether the books of Swami Vivekanand are banned or not.”
The court accepted the application of defence and agreed to provide law books and books of Swami Vivekanand. The court said blank papers can be availed in jail so there is no need to provide them externally.
The books by Swami Vivekanand given to Gadling by the court’s order were Power Capsules, The Gospel of Strength and Personal Development. A fourth book authored by Swami Gokulanand was ‘Goodbye and Negativity’.
The defence also submitted applications to provide a cot, commode and chair to Shoma Sen. The defence appealed that Sen, who is a Nagpur University professor was suffering from arthritis and required these things in jail. The court ordered these things to be provided to her as per the Jail Manual.
Nagpur-based lawyer Surendra Gadling, who was arrested by Pune police for his alleged role in organising Elgar Parishad and his alleged connection with CPI (Maoist), was initially in judicial custody due to medical reason. On June 19 he was shifted from judicial custody to police custody till June 25 and Monday he was again shifted to judicial custody to police custody till June 4.
Gadling, Rona Wilson, Mahesh Raut, Shoma Sen and Sudhir Dhawle were arrested from their respective homes in Delhi, Mumbai and Nagpur on June 6. They were arrested for their alleged role in organising
Elgar Parishad.
