Pune: BMCC introduces a first-of-its-kind skill development course in E-Commerce Operations

Pune: Deccan Education Society's Brihan Maharashtra Commerce College (BMCC) has started a first of its kind skill development based three-year degree course 'Bachelor of Management Studies' (BMS) in E-Commerce Operations, from this academic year. Students will earn valuable work experience during their internship in designated companies in both semesters of last year of this course. BMCC is the first college to launch such a course among the 600 plus colleges affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

BMCC has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Logistics Sector Skill Council (LSC), a not for profit organization, set up by Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) through National Skill Development Corporation of India (NSDC) for the successful implementation of the course. With the sector skill council assistance, it will be possible to arrange internships in various industries for the admitted students.

This course has been started on the recommendation of the state government's department of higher education. The curriculum includes the study on commerce and management subjects, one year of hands-on experience and training in the industry and the subject knowledge required by students to start their own business and be self-employed. Dr Varsha Deshpande will be the coordinator of this course.

Principal Chandrakant Rawal and College Development Committee President Sagar Phadke said, "The core focus of the programme is on skill development and hence 'On-Job-Training (OJT) in the form of Industry apprenticeship as per the provisions of Apprenticeship Act 1961 is embedded in the programme."

"The number of credits required to claim a Bachelor of Management Studies degree in E-Commerce operations is 151. The degree has six semesters in all - four semesters of classroom teaching in the college campus and last two semesters of apprenticeship in a company," they informed.

* Eligibility - 12th standard pass from any stream. Good knowledge of Mathematics/statistics
* Admission based on entrance examination conducted by the college
* Degree awarded by Savitribai Phule Pune University
* Each semester has seven subjects (courses) of three or four credits each which include General courses and Skill-based courses.
* During last two semesters of apprenticeship, two allied courses (from MOOC) have to be taken up out of the available four options
