Pune is famous for educational and professional occasions not only for its residents but also for those who migrate to this city for their education. With city known for knowledge hub, British Council Library in Pune served as learning space for ‘Punekars’ from 1965.
This British Council Library now is closing its physical space on Ganeshkind Road and turning digital. With a wide variation of books, newspapers, journals and magazines for students, working professionals, teachers and more, the library was a pool for everyone.
The library issued a statement which reads, “We have invested in increasing and strengthening our digital offer so (readers) can access a vast range of educational and entertainment resources online.”
It also added, “The mobile app version of the digital library will be launched at the end of June for both Android and iOS platforms, offering (readers) a seamless and interactive customer journey which pulls together our content in one place and allows (them) to build their own library connection.”
The library which had a section for new book lovers, relaxed recliners for all readers, shelves packed with a number of books and not to forget a small cafeteria will soon become a testing centre for IELTS and other UK qualifications.
The statement further said, “This centre will continue to provide many aspirational young people the opportunity to access UK qualifications for international mobility for work or study.”
The library declared that booklovers can continue to use their online membership with their ongoing physical membership is valid.
A former member of the library said, “The library was a second home to me. It had a number of books and a huge space to enjoy the reading. I am very happy that the library is turning into digital space but I will surely cherish all the memories of the physical space.”
