Pune: Chakan MIDC faces garbage dumping problem, entrepreneurs demand remedial action

Pune: Several entrepreneurs from the Chakan MIDC area have complained that a large amount of garbage is being dumped on the main roads in the MIDC premises. Environmentalists and entrepreneurs have expressed their displeasure over this growing problem of waste processing.

Garbage trucks are being run by most of the Gram Panchayats in the MIDC area. The garbage from the village is collected and dumped elsewhere. However, in the MIDC area, businesses operating in private spaces and some manufacturers are dumping their waste on the road side. As a result, the wide roads constructed by MIDC are becoming garbage bins.

The various services provided by the Gram Panchayat in this area are under stress and the problem of garbage piling is increasing. The Gram Panchayat is facing a major problem of collecting waste and processing and disposing it off. Therefore, citizens have stopped waiting for the service from the Gram Panchayat and they have started dumping garbage wherever they can. The roadside space seemed accessible and convenient to several such citizens. The Gram Panchayat officials should be made aware of this and strict and punitive action against the erring persons should be taken, citizens have demanded.

GROUND SITUATION

  • Garbage is dumped on the side of the road during night hours so that no one can see it.
  • Garbage is piled at road side in most places.
  • Chicken feathers, plastic bags, bottles, hotel and vegetable market leftovers are found in the trash.
  • Vegetables, construction debris, salon hair bags also found dumped.
  • Bad smell is affecting commuters in these areas.

Suresh Pingale Deshmukh, Former Deputy Sarpanch of Vasuli village said, “MIDC should provide space for garbage dumping or they should start a waste processing plant. The garbage problem should be solved by collecting garbage from all the villages in MIDC areas processing it in a waste management plant. The revenue of Gram Panchayat has decreased as half of it goes to MIDC.”

Somnath Taras, an entrepreneur from the MIDC area said, “Garbage problem is on the rise on both sides of the road in MIDC Phase II and commuters are suffering daily. Also, the plots allotted for houses are close to the 33 KV power line, which poses a threat to the lives of the citizens.”
