Pune gets record-break rains in single day, roads turn into rivers

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials stated that Shivajinagar area received the highest 24hrs rain in Pune in June after 1991. Also, Pune city has got 64 per cent of the normal June rain in a single day.

Pune: Moisture influx from Arabian Sea and a cyclonic circulation moving in over south Maharashtra resulted in forming cumulonimbus clouds over Pune city. As a result, the city received record-break rains in a single day with Shivajinagar getting 117.1mm in 24 hours on June 8 (Saturday).

The heavy downpour turned city roads in rivers with many areas reporting significant waterlogging in low-lying regions and parking basements. More than 55 tree felling incidents were reported in different parts of the city including Kothrud, Balewadi, Baner, etc.

Pune Fire Brigade received 22 calls related to storm water entering houses and one call related to wall collapse. A person was reported dead in Upper Indira Nagar Ota area after a tree fell due heavy rains. Fire Brigade personnel rescued 3 persons from Kalwad Vasti, Lohegaon area on Saturday night.

Videos of citizens 'playing cricket' and 'rowing boats' on waterlogged roads were doing rounds of several social media platforms. Heavy rains and waterlogging also caused massive traffic jams on all main roads within the city, especially Baner Road, Nagar Road, Jangli Maharaj Road, Satara Road, etc. Sinhagad Road and adjacent areas witnessed surge in water levels and water entering houses in low-lying regions.

Also, Pune city has got 64 per cent of the normal June rain in a single day. The June month total rainfall in Pune is now at 209.2mm and already exceeded the total June normal rain quota of 184mm. Pune has received 315.4mm rains in this year (2024) so far and that has been 41.3 per cent of its normal yearly rainfall quota.
