Pune hospital saves 9-month-old with a fractured skull

Pune: Doctors at Columbia Asia Hospital Pune, successfully saved a 9-month-old child who suffered a fractured skull due to fall from the first floor of a building. The impact of the fall was such that a part of the brain had come out through the fracture side.

Shockingly, doctors have noticed this trend since lockdown wherein children are brought to hospital with serious head injuries.

At Columbia Asia Hospital alone, during the lockdown four such children were brought who had fallen from building's first or second floors.

Dr Pravin Survashe, Neurosurgeon, Columbia Asia Hospital, Pune said that this child came to us at 7 and he was unconscious. It was revealed after a CT scan that there was fracture in the skull vault and brain herniated through the fracture site.

"We decided to operate on the child since there was significant brain damage. We took out the skull bone and repaired the damaged part of the brain during a 5-6 hours long surgery. He was on ventilator for next three to four days and gradually recovered successfully," said Survashe.

He added that the child is completely conscious now and successfully completed all the treatment and got discharged.

Considered to be the effect of the lockdown, Survashe said that children naturally feel restless in such conditions and may get into dangerous accidents. Therefore, parents have to be careful and keep an eye on their children.

Since such young children are considered to be in the high-risk group, parents have to be extra cautious about their movement. With the lockdown extended till the end of this month, it is important to be alert and attentive with children.
