Pune: Khadakwasla dam water discharge increased up to 5136 cusecs; alert issued for citizens residing near Mutha riverbed

Pune: Rainfall activity in catchment areas of Khadakwasla dam has increased since Wednesday night. Due to this, water discharged from the dam has been increased up to 5136 cusecs. District administration has issued an alert to citizens staying near the Mutha river bed in Pune city. 

If rainfall continues in the dam catchment areas, the discharge will be increased further which may create flood like situation along the Mutha river bed. Citizens have been asked to be ready and be prepared to relocate if need arises.

Khadakwasla dam is filled 100 per cent to its capacity (1.97 TMC). Panshet dam has 7.92 TMC water storage, Varasgaon dam has 7.76 TMC and Temghar dam has 1.76 TMC water storage in the dam. The cumulative water stock in these four dams is 19.41 TMC which is 66.58 per cent of their total capacity. These four dams provide water supply to Pune city for the entire year. Last year on this day all the four dams had 100 per cent water stock.

Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said, “Considering the increased rainfall and discharge through Mutha River, the district disaster management control room is ready to tackle any situation. If citizens have any problem they can contact the control room on 020-25506800/01/02/03 phone numbers.”

Water was released for the first time this year from Khadakwasla dam on Wednesday (August 12) morning 10 am after it was filled completely. The water released on Wednesday was just 498 cusecs, but overnight incessant rainfall forced the irrigation department to increase the discharge up to 5136 cusecs.

Meanwhile, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that Pune city will get continuous moderate rainfall for the eight to ten days, while the catchment areas of the dam are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall up to August 18. Pune district has been issued an Orange warning till August 14.
