Pune: In a population of over 40 lakh, the Pune police and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) authorities were able to collect fine from less than 600 persons in a day for the last eight days. These eight days was the critical period when an uptick has been seen in the number of COVID19 cases reported across the city.
According to statistics revealed by the PMC itself, the civic officials have managed to issue challan to only 184 individuals during the last eight days – from February 10 to 17. The Pune Police, on the other hand, have penalised 4498 individuals during the same period for not wearing mask in public places.
Interestingly, the number of cases reported in the Aundh-Baner ward office jurisdiction of the PMC is the highest – 43 – on February 17, however only 10 citizens have been fined by the PMC officials in this region in last eight days.
Dr Kunal Khemnar, Additional Commissioner at PMC, in a press release has stated that PMC officials have collected a fine of Rs 92,500 from the 184 citizens against whom action was taken. The Pune Police have collected a fine of Rs 21.40 lakh from 4498 citizens. The Railway police have collected a fine amount of Rs 36,000 from passengers booked in 72 cases of violation of the COVID-19 guidelines.
