Pune: Even if there has been deficient rainfall in catchment areas of dams providing water to Pune city resulting in fast depletion of water levels, there will be no water cuts till this month end. Mayor Murlidhar Mohol made this announcement on Tuesday (August 4) claiming that this decision has been taken in view of the current Covid-19 outbreak situation and forecast of heavy rains in the next few days in Pune region.
Mohol said that if in the next 15 days rainfall deficiency is not covered, then water cuts will be imminent for Punekars. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appealed to citizens to use water judiciously in the coming days.
Pune Municipal Corporation gets 1400 MLD (Million Litres per Day) water every day. For one month. Pune city requires 1.25 TMC water. The cumulative water storage in four dams – Khadakwasla, Panshet, Temghar and Varasgaon – that supply water to the city was 50 per cent below the year-on-year basis for July month. This year the water stock is 9.87 TMC that is 33.86 per cent while it was 20.44 TMC that is 70 per cent in July 2019. Although, monsoon arrived in time this year, there hasn’t been much activity in the catchment areas as well as Pune city and adjoining areas. Low rainfall in the catchment areas of the dams has resulted in very less rise in their water levels.
A meeting was organised under the chairmanship of Mayor Mohol at the PMC on Tuesday. Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, Additional Commissioner Rubal Agrawal, Water Supply Department Head Anirudh Pavaskar and other officers attended the meeting.
