Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will soon have a makeover with a new entrance gate and revamped infrastructure inside the varsity, as proposed in the ‘master plan’ draft.

The varsity has proposed a new entrance gate, which will be located at the Kothi Gate that opens near Department of Computer Science. The road will directly lead to the main building. The new design has easy routes, which will allow public to easily commute around the campus without confusion.

“As per the new design, location of the entrance gate is situated in a way that the road will follow straight towards the main building. This will make the distance to the main building shorter for the public. Also, people will be able to see the main building, which is a symbol of the varsity, directly,” said an official of Estate Office in SPPU.  They have also drafted a proposal regarding construction of an underpass to enter the university, which will soon be sent to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

“There is generally a lot of traffic congestion at University Chowk, and because of this, students face inconvenience while crossing the road to enter the university. Therefore, for students’ convenience and to avoid the signal, we are planning to propose a design to PMC to construct an underpass to the university and a flyover towards Bremen Chowk,” said the official. There are more innovative plans designed under the master plan like the public buses’ route will be directed from the periphery of the varsity. There will be cycle stands installed at each bus station in the university so that students can commute in and around the campus by using cycles or electric cars provided by the administration.

“The purpose of the master plan is for students and public to have the most convenient and efficient commuting system inside the campus. It is designed, keeping in mind benefits that will be gained in the long run. The draft is still being prepared. There are few obstructions in the new design, which need to be sorted, after which it will be sent to the government for approval. Most likely, the drafting of the proposal will be completed within one or two months, after which it will be sent to the government,” said Nitin Karmalkar, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of SPPU.
