Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is mulling starting a satellite campus. As the university has been starting several new courses and due to the increasing number of students, the varsity is considering starting a satellite campus soon.

The administration has been currently talking with a few organisations on this matter and soon it will be finalised, informed Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar.

“The university is spread over 400 acres of land on Ganeshkhind Road. There are various departments, sports ground and hostels on campus. With the increasing number of academic courses and students, we need more space on the campus. However, there are limitations for constructing new buildings, as we have to also maintain the greenery on campus,” said Karmalkar.

“Thus, to reduce the burden on the campus, we are planning to start a satellite campus,” added Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar.

The university has been doing a survey on feasibility of establishing a satellite campus for past six months. The administration is also considering approaching the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to avail required funds.

“Soon we will come to a decision on this,” stated Karmalkar.

Various food joints, varieties of food and no overcharging

  • Students of SPPU will soon be able to have food of their choice on the campus itself, as the construction of visioned food mall has been completed and the varsity has called for tenders of eateries.
  • It has been built over 8,000 sq ft area and can accommodate about 400 people at a time. There will be eight food outlets consisting of various food joints and local caterers and washroom for students. The food sold in the outlets will be based on market price, however, Vice-Chancellor has assured that students won’t be overcharged. The concept has been derived from the airport food malls.
  • “The food mall will host all kinds of food outlets from North Indian to South Indian foods as well as continental food, etc. The students can have a variety of food on campus and will not have to go outside campus for anything,” said Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar.
