In a tragic incident, four players and the President of Brazilian soccer club Palmas died in a plane crash on Sunday.

The accident took place when the plane suddenly skided to the ground at the end of the runway during takeoff, the club said in a statement. The players were travelling to Goiania, in the central region of Brazil, to play a match against Vila Nova.

Along with the President Lucas Meira, players including Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme No, Ranule and Marcus Molinari, as well as the pilot lost their lives. The Brazilian fourth division club Palmas Futebol e Regatas was launched in 1997.

The cause of the accident is not known yet.

Meanwhile, the sporting world is in a grief and offering their condolences. FIFA on their Twitter handle wrote, "FIFA offers its condolences after a plane crash tragically claimed six lives in Brazil - including five members of Palmas Futebol e Regatas. Football extends its deepest sympathies to the victims and their families at this difficult time."
